This site is more about getting out there than about gear because I don’t believe that getting out there is really about gear. The things we bring with us help keep us safe and comfortable but I try not to get so caught up in it that I lose track of why I go out there in the first place.
That being said I started doing gear reviews a while back as a way of returning the favor after reading so many reviews myself. The camaraderie of gear discussion is something that translates well from the campsite to a website and I have found both extensive gear info and good discussion at Trailspace.com Despite the fact that they say they are all about gear there are a lot of nice folks involved in the site both on the admin and user side so I find the experience there just as much about the people as the gear.
This page has links to reviews I’ve done there. If you read them and like them please give them an up vote on the site there. Even if you aren’t interested in reading any of these you may want to bookmark the site as a resource the next time you are in the market for stuff and things

Very nicely done Trailspace Review on the Massdrop Veil Windbreaker! I need a breathable jacket shell like this that is more rainproof for Washington State often wet mountain hiking.
I’m a bigger often too hot from body heat fellow*. I use a Goretex Outdoor Research Foray Rainjacket Shell now loving all those side zips but want a lighter contingency shell like the Massdrop too. Buddy may I ask what do you recommend?
* I was also a featured top 10 reviewer for Trailspace in 2015 (see Asolo Powermatic 200, Nikwax, and Osprey Hydraulics reviews). Retired now we hike 4-6 days a week, sea kayak and landscape garden alot too. Having an active photography hobby I post under Gary F. Leatham on Facebook.
Hey Gary, I remember you 🙂 Not as many folks still writing reviews, but it keeps me out of trouble…mostly heh. Glad you liked the Veil review. Like I said, I thought it was sort of silly until I tried it and now I carry it everywhere.
As for actual rain gear I have been wearing a TNF Venture 2 for years. Functional, but steamy on the long haul even with pit zips open. This year I tested and reviewed Patagonia’s redo of their Torrentshell that uses modern materials. We didn’t get much rain for testing, but it really breathes much better than the V2 from what I was able to see. It weighs a bit more, but if it works better then I think it is worth the penalty. Check it out here if you haven’t already https://www.trailspace.com/gear/patagonia/torrentshell-3l-jacket/#review41070
As you can see I have sort of been ignoring this site lately. I’ve been posting videos on YouTube instead, but I really should update the gear review page heh. I haven’t posted any of my reviews there in ages. Thanks for getting in touch. I always wonder where people go when I don’t see them anymore. Good to know you’re still out there 🙂
